Wheel Hub Assembly Kit Contents: How Buyers Verify the BOM

The words ‘wheel hub kit’ do not define a universal box. Depending on the application and seller, the supplied scope may be only an integrated hub unit or may add selected retaining hardware, fasteners, caps or sensor-related items. Buyers should approve a line-specific bill of materials.

How can a buyer verify wheel hub assembly kit contents?

Separate the core assembly from loose items, assign each included component a part or controlled description, quantity, revision and evidence source, and compare the BOM with the quotation, sample, labels and final pack. Record absent items explicitly where the buyer might otherwise assume inclusion. Never infer universal contents from the word ‘kit,’ a representative photograph or another application. Installation hardware and torque requirements remain application-specific.

Define the supplied unit before counting accessories

Start by deciding whether the requested item is a bearing unit, flanged hub bearing or more integrated wheel hub assembly. NTN describes Gen 1, Gen 2 and Gen 3 configurations with different levels of integration and driven/non-driven arrangements. Those families explain why one box may contain a compact bearing and another an assembly with flanges and studs. They do not prescribe the service-kit contents for a particular vehicle.

Record which functions are physically integrated: bearing rings and rolling elements, seals, wheel flange, mounting flange, studs, center spline or bore, encoder or sensing components. Then list loose supplied items separately. A component built into the hub should not appear again as loose BOM hardware, and an item visible in a marketing scene should not be recorded unless the quotation or sample confirms it.

Use “included,” “not included,” “not applicable” and “unresolved.” A blank cell is risky because sales, purchasing and customers may interpret it differently. When installation requires a new fastener under the OE service procedure, the product record must still state whether the quoted kit supplies it.

Give each loose item a controlled identifier or sufficiently precise description, quantity per kit, revision and disposition. Add a source field showing whether the value came from a supplier drawing, approved sample, customer specification or application service record. If the item is optional, define the option code and quotation line rather than combining alternatives in one image.

Use a controlled layout photograph, not a decorative flat lay

Place the core assembly and all loose items on a neutral surface without overlap. Capture an overall image and detail images for threads, clips, connector or similar small parts. Include the sample or BOM ID in the file record, not as unverifiable branding on the image. Photograph empty packaging compartments if they help show the intended arrangement.

Reconcile quotation, product record, sample and package

Use one comparison table with the buyer requirement, supplier quotation, sample observation, approved BOM and final receiving result. Every difference needs a disposition. A quotation that says “hub assembly” while the sample includes extra bolts can be ambiguous: the supplier may consider them promotional, standard, optional or accidental. Resolve the status before publishing or ordering.

Compare quantity per kit and quantity per carton separately. Four mounting bolts per kit and ten kits per carton should not become “40 bolts included” in a product description. Keep spare or overpack material outside the customer BOM unless it is a contractual part of every sale unit.

Do not generalize service hardware or torque

Fasteners and retaining items can be application-specific and may have replacement, lubrication, coating or tightening requirements defined by an OE or component service procedure. The BOM identifies what is in the box; it does not authorize reuse, substitute a fastener, or provide a universal installation value.

BCA’s axle-nut torque lookup uses year, make and model and is designed to keep application data current. That official approach reinforces the rule: do not print one axle-nut torque across a hub category or infer a value from nut size. Direct installers to the applicable vehicle or component source.

SKF provides application-focused mounting instructions and wheel-end tools. Use the instructions appropriate to the part and vehicle. The presence of a snap ring, nut or bolt in a kit does not determine the pressing force, support surface, tightening sequence or final torque.

Keep ABS-related kit items tied to the exact variant

An assembly may integrate an encoder or sensor, include an external lead, or work with a vehicle sensor that is not supplied. Store sensor included, lead included, connector, pin count, clips and grommets as separate fields. Timken’s Sensor-Pac is an official example of an integrated sensing assembly, but it is not a template for all hub products.

If visually similar variants use different connectors or routes, create separate BOM revisions or supplier models. Do not use “ABS compatible” as a substitute for the actual configuration. Product content should display only confirmed fields and route unresolved inquiries to fitment review.

Control substitutions and BOM changes

Define which changes require notification: supplier model, integrated component, stud or fastener, nut, clip, sensor lead, connector, protective cap, instruction, label or packaging. A supposedly equivalent bolt or connector may affect installation or fitment. Open a change record, review evidence and decide whether a new sample is required.

Revision history should show the changed item, previous and new value, reason, evidence, affected customer stock codes and approval. Do not silently replace a photo while leaving the BOM unchanged. If the customer approved a private-label kit, coordinate product, artwork and pack revisions.

Verify BOM completeness at receiving

  1. Confirm carton and inner label match the approved SKU and revision.
  2. Select samples under the agreed plan and keep lines/lots separated.
  3. Lay out every core and loose component without overlap.
  4. Count items and compare identifiers or controlled descriptions.
  5. Inspect threads, clips, connector and protective parts for damage.
  6. Check that loose hardware could not strike the hub in transit.
  7. Photograph missing, extra or substituted components with the line and lot.
  8. Quarantine affected scope until disposition is authorized.

A complete count does not prove the correct variant. Compare thread, shape, connector or other defined fields where relevant. Conversely, do not reject a kit for omitting an item that the approved BOM explicitly excludes. Receiving decisions need the current revision.

Return an unambiguous kit line in the quotation

The supplier response should state the core unit, each included loose item, quantity, packaging and any option. Attach the BOM or approved layout photograph and identify its revision. If hardware is not included, state that clearly. If availability depends on quantity or packaging, tie it to the exact commercial line rather than using general website language.

For a multi-item RFQ, return one supplied-scope record per proposed model. Do not assume that all hub assemblies share one kit template. This makes unit-price comparison fair: buyers can see whether offers differ because one includes hardware, a lead or special packaging.

Create a reusable approved kit master

After sample approval, connect supplier model, application record, drawing, BOM, photographs, label and packaging revision. Give the customer-facing stock code a controlled relationship to that master. Repeat purchase orders can reference it while checking for change notifications.

Keep editorial and product pages synchronized from approved data, but do not publish confidential drawings or unsupported claims. This hierarchy reduces duplicate content and turns kit information into a real purchasing aid.

Worked BOM example: core assembly plus conditional hardware

An RFQ asks for a wheel hub “kit.” The proposed core is an integrated hub with studs and an external sensor lead. The supplier photo also shows an axle nut, four mounting bolts, a snap ring and a cap. The buyer should not copy all visible items into the description. Create a candidate BOM and ask the supplier to mark each item included, optional, not included or not applicable for the exact model.

The application evidence may show that the snap ring belongs to another bearing construction and the cap belongs to a non-driven variant. Remove them from the candidate line but preserve the clarification. The quotation returns the hub, pre-installed studs and lead as the core, with axle nut and mounting bolts identified separately according to the actual offer. The final photo is retaken with only the approved scope.

If the buyer orders a private-label kit, the BOM also identifies barrier, insert, unit label, instruction and carton artwork revisions. Packaging items are not customer installation components, but they remain controlled because a pack change can affect protection and identity. Quantities are stated per sale unit and per carton in separate fields.

How to describe a deliberately excluded item

Use direct language such as “axle nut not included; follow the vehicle service procedure for replacement requirements” only when the exact kit record confirms the exclusion. Do not say “reuse existing nut,” because reuse rules are application-specific. An exclusion statement helps the buyer plan without turning packaging content into installation advice.

Minimum data fields for a reusable BOM master

Store BOM ID and revision, supplier model, buyer SKU, RFQ line, application-scope link, item sequence, component identifier or controlled description, quantity, integrated/loose/packaging class, option status, approved substitute rule if any, evidence source, sample ID, photograph reference, effective date, approver and change history.

For hardware, keep thread, size, grade, coating or other characteristics only when supported by the controlled source and required for identification. Do not reverse-engineer an undocumented grade from appearance. For sensor items, keep connector and routing evidence tied to the exact variant. For instructions, preserve the document revision and language.

Use relationships rather than copying text across product records. If several verified hubs share a packaging component, reference the controlled packaging item while keeping each product’s approved combination. A later component change can then identify affected products without a global text replacement.

Quarterly or event-driven BOM audit

Compare current supplier quotation, sample, received pack, master data and public product description. Review open substitutions, missing photographs and components with ambiguous status. Trigger immediate review after a product, connector, hardware, instruction, label or packaging change, or after receiving reports a repeat mismatch.

Do not set a public universal audit interval. The organization can choose a schedule based on risk and activity. Event-driven control matters more: a dormant SKU ordered after a long gap should have its current supplier model and revisions reconfirmed before release.

How BOM evidence should appear on a product page

State the exact confirmed core and included items in a scannable list, with a note that fitment and service requirements remain application-specific. Use actual approved photographs. Avoid showing optional items around the product without labels, and avoid broad “complete kit” language unless the page defines complete for that SKU.

Link to the fitment, ABS and OE/RFQ guides for the buying method. Keep drawings, confidential specifications and internal approval status out of public copy, while retaining them in the master record. The result is concise, truthful content that helps a buyer compare real supplied scope.

Roles and approvals for kit-content control

Catalog or product staff own the relationship between application and supplier model. Engineering or technical review owns configuration and drawing evidence. Quality owns sample and receiving verification. Purchasing owns the quoted scope and supplier change communication. Packaging or logistics owns pack components. Sales owns the customer-facing promise but should not edit approved contents independently.

Define who can approve a substitute or customer-specific option. If one customer requests bolts while the standard kit excludes them, create an option or separate SKU rather than changing the base photograph for everyone. If an item is removed, update quotation, BOM, sample reference, pack and page in one controlled change.

This role clarity also supports corrections. A customer report of a missing item can be compared with the ordered BOM and received pack before a warranty or fulfillment decision. The investigation stays focused on evidence instead of assumptions about what a ‘complete kit’ should contain.

Keep a named reviewer and effective date on the approved master. That small control prevents an old sales image or quotation from overriding a later BOM revision during a rush order.
